Mother Mary Joseph, who runs the Good Shepherd, has no idea that the asylum's physician, Dr. Peters, is involved in the eugenics movement and is experimenting on the girls with various sterilization techniques. A month later, Dr. Peters sterilizes Lily after delivering her baby girl.</p><p>As the eugenics movement gains momentum in America, Dr. Peters becomes a minor celebrity. After one of his speeches in Scranton, Lily follows him to his hotel with pistol in tow. A violent incident ensues, though not at Lily's hand, and in the end, Lily and Violet both risk losing their husbands, their children, and each other to do what they think is right.</p><p><b>Barbara J. Taylor </b>lives in Scranton, Pennsylvania, home of the second-largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the country.
